Philosophy General Emphasis Major Requirements Update
PHI 13 + PHI 13D replacing PHI 13G
As of Winter Quarter 2026, the Philosophy Department has updated the lower‑division options for students pursuing the General Emphasis within the Philosophy major. This change follows the discontinuation of PHI 13G: Minds, Brains, and Computers with Discussion (4 units), a course that previously fulfilled Group D – Philosophy of the Mind in the introductory requirements.
PHI 13G has now been replaced by two separate courses:
- PHI 13: Minds, Brains, and Computers (3 units)
- PHI 13D: Minds, Brains, and Computers Discussion (1 unit)
Students in the General Emphasis who wish to select Group D – Philosophy of the Mind as one of their three required lower‑division groups may continue to do so by completing both PHI 13 and PHI 13D. Together, these courses cover the full content previously offered in PHI 13G.
Students who have already passed PHI 13G will still receive full credit toward the requirement and do not need to take the new course pair.
